Enjoy this beer in person at our craft beer bar in District 1.
It is hard to find a beer that truly captures a season, especially in the eternal summer of Saigon. But Hanoi Autumn by Ibiero Craft Beer attempts to do just that, bottle the romance of a cool northern morning using traditional Vòng Village green rice. This brew recently took home a Gold Medal at the Asia Beer Championship, so I knew I had to see if the flavor lived up to the accolades.
First Taste
As soon as the glass hits the table, you are greeted with something distinctively "green." It isn't the aggressive pine of an IPA, but a soft, fragrant whisper of pandan leaves and fresh-cut grass. The first sip follows suit: it is incredibly crisp and light. It leads with a clean maltiness that quickly gives way to the unique, vanilla-like nuttiness of the green rice (Cốm). It’s immediately refreshing, washing over the palate with a very gentle sweetness.
The Second Sip
By the second sip, the subtlety really shines. The bitterness is restrained, (sitting at a very low 15 IBU) which allows that sticky rice character to linger just enough without becoming cloying. The carbonation is lively, scrubbing the palate clean after every drink. It feels like a session beer designed for nostalgia; it doesn't fight you, it just invites you to relax. It’s the kind of beer that makes you pause and look for a breeze, even if you’re sitting in a humid bar in District 1.
Final Thought
Hanoi Autumn isn't here to blow your mind with hops; it is a cultural experience, smooth and approachable. It stays refreshing while offering a distinct, local character that you won't find in any imported bottle. It is a fantastic example of how Vietnamese ingredients can elevate a standard lager into something memorable.
Who should try it
This is the perfect beer for people who say they "don't like craft beer" because it's too bitter or heavy. It's also great for seasoned drinkers looking for a palate cleanser or a lighter option to start the night. If you love the smell of pandan or want to taste a bit of Hanoi history, this is for you.
Appearance
Clear, pale straw-gold color with a modest, fluffy white head that dissipates into a thin lace.
Aroma
Dominant notes of pandan and green young rice (Cốm), supported by a faint floral hint from the Saaz hops.
Taste & Mouthfeel
Very light body. Crisp and dry with a smooth, nutty rice finish and almost zero bitterness.
Overall Impression
Lively carbonation that makes it very drinkable and refreshing.
Pairing & Setting
Grilled Squid with Salt & Chili: This is likely your best pairing. The salt and chili provide a nice kick that contrasts with the beer's subtle sweetness, while the crisp lager cuts right through the heat.
